In November 2004, Tor joined participants from Scandanavia, Iceland, USA, Namibia and several other European countries to study state-of-the art commercial trawl performance and design at the Fourth International Training Course in Trawl Technology presented by SINTEF (The Foundation for Scientific and Industrial Research at the Norwegian Institute of Technology), the largest independent research organisation in Scandinavia.
Tor is standing sixth from left in the second row. Koji Tamura, NETS' Production Engineer, is third from left in the first row.
From the classroom lectures and practical exercises carried out in the North Sea Centre Flume Tank, Tor and the others gained an improved understanding of trawl performance in practice, both from an engineering and a biological point of view. The group studied different commercial trawl designs and learned how the performance of the gear is influenced by changes in net specification, rigging and towing speed. In addition, participants received an update on ongoing research within this field that relates to fish resource management, e.g., development of species selective gears, measurement and improvement of cod end selectivity.
